Zahid Raza

Zahid Raza is a Consultant Vascular Surgeon at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, where he has practised since his appointment in 2002. He holds a concurrent position as Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the University of Edinburgh, reflecting a career that has always combined active clinical practice with a serious commitment to surgical education and research.Born in Yorkshire and raised in West Lothian, Raza read medicine at the University of Dundee, graduating in 1990.

His early surgical training and MD research were both carried out in Dundee, before he moved to Edinburgh in 1997 to complete his higher surgical training in vascular surgery. He spent a further period at Hull Royal Infirmary's vascular unit before returning to Edinburgh for his consultant appointment.His clinical practice covers the full scope of vascular surgery, with particular interests in varicose veins, aortic surgery, carotid artery disease, peripheral arterial disease and pelvic vein conditions.

He manages both planned and emergency vascular referrals across the Edinburgh catchment area, and additionally lectures to postgraduate students at Queen Margaret University on vascular disease in the context of diabetes.Raza's contribution to the wider surgical community is substantial. He has been an examiner for the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh since 2004, serves as the College's Regional Surgical Advisor for Edinburgh, and previously held the position of Deputy Convenor of RCSEd Examinations.

He currently sits as an elected Member of the RCSEd Council, the governing body responsible for shaping surgical standards and education across the UK and internationally.
