Foam Sclerotherapy

The principle behind foam treatment is the same as for the other treatment methods. It is about closing off the blood flow in the diseased veins causing varicose veins and thread veins. Learn more below

No need for local anesthesia

Foam treatment involves foaming up a liquid medical preparation (Aethoxysklerol) with air, and injecting it directly into the relevant veins through a very thin needle. Aethoxysklerol chemically affects the inside of the vein so that it contracts and the blood flow stops. The foaming preparation increases the contact surface with the inside of the vein and thus increases the effectiveness.

Local anesthesia is not used because the needle is very thin and does not cause significant discomfort. Foam is used alone and in combination with other treatment methods. It is often very useful in cases where you have previously been treated for varicose veins, as the remaining veins will be anatomically irregular and not receptive to either laser, radiofrequency, or glue. In addition, foam treatment is very effective for treating smaller and superficial varicose veins and thread veins.

Foam treatment is often used where varicose veins have previously been treated. Foam treatment is extremely gentle and you can continue with your usual daily life immediately after the treatment.

asked questions

Find answers to all of your questions regarding varicose veins and thread veins.
Can I undergo treatment if I am on blood-thinning treatment?
keyboard_arrow_down
Yes. If you are taking blood-thinning medication, you should not stop it. This should only be done in extremely rare cases, and if so, the doctor has informed you about it during the preliminary examination.
How long does the surgery take?
keyboard_arrow_down
A normal-length operation takes between 45 and 60 minutes. A larger operation on both legs can take up to 90 minutes.
Does the treatment hurt?
keyboard_arrow_down
Some think that the anesthetic injections hurt, but as soon as these are completed, you are anesthetised and the remaining treatment should not be felt. We always strive to make you as pain-free and comfortable as possible.
Can I drive after surgery?
keyboard_arrow_down
We recommend that you do not drive yourself after the treatment. If you get a bandage over the entire leg, you can become more or less stiff above the knee, which can hinder the ability to drive safely. You can move freely otherwise, that is, on foot and by public transport.
Should I use a support stocking after surgery?
keyboard_arrow_down
There is no evidence that it helps with the long-term results or reduces the risk of complications. But if you think it helps against swelling and discomfort, you can use a knee-high compression stocking for 5–6 days after the treatment. You must buy the compression stockings yourself.
